A creative way to help kids learn, addition, the value of money and shopping to a budget, with some messy fun thrown in at the end!

(If you don't like the idea of wasting food, give this one a miss!)

Materials:

  • Whatever safe materials your kids choose to buy.
  • An easy-clean area (probably outdoors) that you don't mind getting messy.
  • Old clothes or swimwear.

Give each child (or big kids too, if adults want to play!) a budget to spend. Allow them to brainstorm and plan what SAFE materials they could buy to use for the Food Fight. They must seek your approval of their potential items. (Be aware if any of the kids have allergies) If there are a few kids taking part, maybe they would like to pair up or form teams.

Take the kids shopping and let them find their items on the shelves, check prices and work out what they can actually afford. Then let them buy their items.

Once home, give the kids time to make anything that requires preparation. Go over any safety rules. Change into suitable clothing. If you are concerned about eyes, sun glasses or protective goggles could be used.

Then... let the fun begin! Lots of sloppy messy fun! Then get everyone involved in the clean up.

Some suggested possible fun materials are jelly (jello), custard, instant pudding, sloppy instant mashed potato, shaken soda water (no throwing the cans or bottles!), even non-edible items like confetti or rolls of toilet paper.

Remember... safety, supervision and common sense... then...

Have fun!
